On 19 September the Red Shirts demonstrated again on the Ratchaprasong Intersection, the same area they occupied for many weeks in April and May of 2010. The demonstration was organized on the 4th anniversary of the military coup in 2006, and four months after the crackdown on them by the government in May 2010.
Symbolic red ribbons were tied everywhere, and candles burned in commemoration of the Red Shirts who died at the location some months ago. Lots of people turned up, we think more than expected. There was only a token police presence. The protesters were not allowed to impede traffic which they actually did, and could not use sound amplifiers, to which ruling they adhered. The atmosphere was altogether rather cheerful, with lots of singing and chanting slogans (People died here etc.) Lots of red shirts and onlookers also on the pedestrian bridge linking the Chitlom with the Siam Square skytrain stations. The skytrain continued its service without apparent problems, with some soldiers on guard. See pictures and video of the gathering below.
